A massive winter storm has southern Ontario in its sights, and Hamilton may end up with the largest accumulation of snow it’s seen in four years.

Environment Canada says a low pressure system developing Monday over Oklahoma and Missouri will track northeastward toward the Great Lakes.
“This is a big storm system,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson. “With the approach of this system, it is possible to get the lion’s share of the snow from early hours of the morning Wednesday until early afternoon Wednesday.”
Hamilton is expected to receive 25 to 30 centimetres of snow during that period, he said.
Such storms are relatively rare, he said. “We’ve got to go back to Feb. 13, 2007 when the airport reported 30.4 centimetres on that one day.”
Western parts of Lake Ontario – Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, Stoney Creek – will get enhanced amounts of snow because the wind will likely becoming of Lake Ontario from the east.
“That will enhance the intensity of the storm … and we’ve got the complications of likely very windy conditions, especially late Tuesday going into the early part of Wednesday.” Coulson said. “We’ll have reduced visibility and blowing snow, along with some drifting.”
By the time the severe storm system has made its way through 29 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces, it will have affected 100 million people in North America, says Environment Canada senior climatologist Dave Phillips.
Starting around noon Tuesday, between 20 and 30 centimetres of snow — that’s nearly a foot of the white stuff — is expected to hit the GTA and Hamilton area.
Heavy snowfall and winds gusting between 40 to 60 km/h will increase late into the night and continue into early Wednesday. And the current frigid temperatures — it’s a freezing -16 C, feeling like -22 C with the wind chill — will likely accompany the storm.
The cause of the storm, said Phillips, is a low pressure system developing over the southern states: cold air from the north will combine with “warm sopping moist air from the south.”


“This is when wild weather breaks out,” he said.

“If it is, then it won’t beat us up as much,” adding that could cause Toronto to get more snow than areas further north. “The closer you are to Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, the more effect it’s going to have.”
But Ontario won’t see the worst of it: the storm is already brewing south of the border, bringing rain, snow, ice, hail and even tornadoes.
“All we’re going to deal with is snow, and blowing and drifting,” Phillips says.
Before noon tomorrow, Phillips predicts there will be a “dress rehearsal” for the big snow fall, saying there will likely be flurries beginning in the morning.
At first, Hamilton will deal with a lighter snowfall beginning after midnight Monday, and then snow on and off Tuesday before intensifying overnight.
Police want motorists to keep up to date on weather information, and are asking everyone to ensure their vehicles are in proper working order for winter weather conditions and that motorists have a survival kit along with a cell phone if venturing out.
